2. Kalarippayattu

Kalari-Ppayattu, the ancient martial art of South-India, is based on the science of yoga for its exercises; while it's medical system is based on the science of Ayurveda, Siddha and Tribal medicine. The origin of Kalari-Payat is obscure, since it has been nurtured from the oldest martia1 tradition of South-India of Dravidian origin and later influenced by Aryan martial traditions, which is an off short of Dhanur-Veda (the ancient Indian Science of war). According to oral tradition and the ancient text 'Keralol-Pathi', it is the warrior saint Parasurama, who is considered to be the founder of Kalari-Payat in South-India. Parasurama is said to have brought 36,000 brahmin families into South-India and settled them in 64 villages. These brahmin families were proficient in the use of weapons, which was taught in 108 Kalaries, established by Parasurama in these villages. It is possible that the already existing ancient Dravidian martial traditions, with the Aryan martial arts, formed the present Kalari-Payat as it is still practiced in South-India, today with little change, for the past 1500 years.

4. Kerala Kalamandalam

Kerala Kalamandalam is the premiere public institution in India imparting training in and conducting performances of the classical arts of Kerala viz. Kathakali, Koodiyattam, Mohiniyaattam, Thullal and Panchavaadyam. Founded in 1930 by renowned poet Padmabhooshan Vallathol Narayana Menon along the banks of the river Nila in the Cheruthuruthy village of Thrissur District, Kalamandalam is an immortal name in the cultural map of the world. Training in art-disciplines at Kalamandalam essentially adheres to the ancient Gurukula sambradaaya (The traditional mode of education which calls for a deep bond between the teacher and the student). Kalamandalam is strictly a residential center of learning. Veteran teachers and talented students are its inestimable wealth. For art-recitals held in Kalamandalam and outside, artiste-teachers and students participate. Kalamandalam Kathakali, Koodiyattam, Mohiniyaatam and Thullal Troupes have traveled widely in India and abroad for programs, lecture-demonstrations and workshops. They have represented India in many an international dance and theater festival.

5. Muttathu Varkey

Distinguished writer T. Padmanabhan has won this year's Muttathu Varkey Award, the highest award given for Malayalam Literature. It was constituted by Muttathu Varkey's fans, friends, and relatives. The winner was selected by popular opinion voting system and then prominent judges' final decision.Announcing this at a news conference, Muttathu Varkey foundation Chairman M K Madhavan Nair and Secretary Dr. Mathew J Muttathu said the award, consisting of a cash prize of Rs 33,333, memento and citation would be presented at a function at Kazhikode on May 28, the 18th death anniversary of Muttathu Varkey
